The modern age has blessed us: with resources, with information, with access. And while these tools can certainly be invaluable in finding answers and understanding how our bodies work, they’ve also created a bit of a disconnect. Once guided by intuition, many of us now look outward to answer the questions burning within. But is that really what’s best? Are we serving ourselves by ignoring our inner fire and only listening to those outside ourselves?
The answer is not always. When we only adhere to prescriptive guidelines laid out by others, we often do so in an effort to be perfect. We strive to do everything “right” even if it isn’t necessarily right for us. Other times, we are so overwhelmed by the rush of life, we try to follow general “rules”, forgetting to tune into that inner voice. While there are certain rules, certain dos and don’ts, particularly during pregnancy, that are important for your health and that of your unborn child, every body and every pregnancy is different. Our bodies are far wiser than we think, and our intuition is powerful, able to show us what we need during this transformative phase.
"We believe it is important to trust yourself, listen to your body and believe in your intuition. Spending time alone, spending time taking store of how you feel and what you need can help you connect to and open up your inner channel."
Most of us have probably had that ‘gut feeling’ before, that sense deep in our core that something is or isn’t right. It turns out that this isn’t just our imagination; in fact, research actually indicates that this feeling happens in our brains, in the reticular activation system (RAS). The RAS rules our emotions, memory, learning, motivation and decision-making, thus creating our intuition. It filters information sent to our brains by our senses and matches this information up with past experiences to help us know what to do.
The journey into motherhood is probably one of the most important journeys you’ll ever take, and it is a magical, transformational journey. While we value research, the voices of our doctors and midwives and sage wisdom passed down by other mothers, our bodies often know best what we need throughout this journey. We can be inspired by our own inner voice and feel free to make our own decisions about how to nourish our bodies, the birth plans that suit us best and how to raise our children.
"Allowing your intuition to blossom will help you begin to notice how you feel, what you want and how your pregnancy is affecting you."
We believe it is important to trust yourself, listen to your body and believe in your intuition. Spending time alone, spending time taking store of how you feel and what you need can help you connect to and open up your inner channel. Meditation, movement and self-care are beautiful ways for our bodies and intuition to become more in sync. We like getting out into nature, taking a class, taking a bath or cooking something that feeds our body and soul. Allowing your intuition to blossom will help you begin to notice how you feel, what you want and how your pregnancy is affecting you. Your body will give you little hints and tell you how to adjust to make things right for you. The more you practice, the easier it will become.
Though it can be more difficult to listen to yourself than all of the noise around you, we encourage you to pay attention to what’s inside. Just like the muscles we care for in class, our intuition grows stronger every time we use it. Every woman has strong, powerful intuition; she just needs to develop the ears to hear it. But please, be patient and gentle with yourself. Like all good things, learning to trust your intuition takes time.
